What is Botox?

Botox is a by-product from the bacteria known as Clostridium botulinum. It has been purified and when used in small doses produces weakened muscles. It has been used for many years in treating patients with muscular diseases where the muscles are in spasm. For the past 10 years, it has been used in cosmetic dermatology to treat hyperfunctional facial lines.

What are hyperfunctional facial lines?
These are expression lines such as frown lines, brow lines, crow s feet and bunny lines which become prominent with age, sun damage, and excessive facial muscle activity.

How does Botox work?
Botox is injected into the muscles of facial expression. This blocks the muscle from contracting allowing the overlying skin to become smooth with fewer lines and wrinkles. The untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion allowing normal facial expression.

Are the injections painful?
The muscle injections are given with a tiny needle so there is only minimal discomfort. Topical anesthetic creams can be applied to the skin prior to the injections.
